Barcelona, once you are there

The sea, Gaudí and a city that dines late.

Barcelona is two superimposed cities: that of Gaudí and the tourists, and that of the Catalans who live there. The former is visited by reservation; the latter begins in the neighbourhoods of Gràcia, Sants or Poblenou, where people dine at ten o'clock at night in village squares. The sea is twenty minutes from the centre, which is almost unfair.

Getting around. The underground connects the airport to the centre, as do the Aerobús buses. The urban network is dense and inexpensive; a ten-trip card can be shared among several people. The city is flat near the sea and is very easily navigated by bicycle.

Where to stay. Gràcia for the village atmosphere, El Born for the medieval alleys, Eixample for the calm and modernist buildings. Avoid the Raval at night and the Ramblas altogether. Expect from 70 to 160 € per night.

What to eat. Tapas, but not on the Ramblas: pa amb tomàquet, bombas, escalivada, octopus. Calçotada in winter. The Boqueria market has become an attraction; that of Sant Antoni or Llibertat serves locals and costs half as much.

What to do. The Sagrada Família, to be booked several days in advance. Park Güell, also on a time slot. Casa Batlló and La Pedrera. Montjuïc and its Miró foundation. And the Gràcia neighbourhood on a weeknight, without a plan.

Good to know. Watch out for pickpockets on the underground and the Ramblas, it is a real issue and not a legend. Dinner is at 9 p.m. or 10 p.m.; a restaurant serving at 7 p.m. is not for locals. August is hot, noisy and many good addresses close.
