Madrid, once you are there

Less postcard than Barcelona, much more lively.

Madrid has neither sea nor famous cathedral, and perhaps that is why it has remained Spanish. People come here for the museums, which rank among the greatest in the world, and for a street life that begins when elsewhere it stops. The city is high, dry, luminous.

Getting around. The underground connects the airport to the centre, with an airport supplement. The network is one of the best in Europe, dense and inexpensive. The centre is very walkable. High-speed trains put Toledo, Segovia or Córdoba within day-trip reach.

Where to stay. La Latina and Lavapiés for the atmosphere and tapas, Malasaña and Chueca for the bars, Salamanca for bourgeois calm. Expect from 70 to 150 € per night.

What to eat. Bocadillo de calamares, an improbable and excellent Madrilenian specialty. Cocido in winter. Tapas are eaten standing up, moving from bar to bar rather than sitting down. The San Miguel market is pretty but touristic; prefer San Fernando or Antón Martín.

What to do. The Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen, all three with open access at the end of the day. Retiro Park. The Royal Palace. And a vermouth evening on Sunday lunchtime in La Latina, which is an institution.

Good to know. July and August are crushing, the city empties out. Schedules are shifted: lunch at 2 p.m. or 3 p.m., dinner at 10 p.m. Many museums close on Monday. The altitude makes the nights cool even in summer.
