Lisbon, once you are there

Hills, light and a permanent gentleness.

Lisbon is a city of hills, light and azulejos, descending towards the Tagus. It has kept its yellow trams, its working-class neighborhoods and a form of gentleness not found elsewhere in Europe. It has also become expensive and very busy: you have to get up early or leave the center to find it again.

Getting around. The metro connects the airport to the center for a very low price. Trams, funiculars and elevators are part of the network. Suburban trains serve Sintra, Cascais and Estoril in less than an hour.

Where to stay. Alfama and Mouraria for the soul, Príncipe Real and Graça for the quiet and the view, Alcântara for the prices. Expect from 60 to 140 € per night. Be aware that many accommodations are at the top of a hill and without an elevator.

What to eat. Bacalhau in a thousand ways, grilled sardines in summer, pork à l'alentejana. And the pastel de nata, which is eaten warm, dusted with cinnamon, standing at the counter. Neighborhood tascas serve a dish of the day for a modest sum.

What to do. Tram 28 early in the morning. The miradouros, those panoramic terraces, at the end of the day. The Jerónimos Monastery and the Belem Tower. Sintra over a full day. And a fado evening in a small venue in Alfama, not in a dinner show.

Good to know. The slopes are real: plan for good shoes. Tap water is drinkable. Beware of restaurants that bring unrequested appetizers, they are billed — you can refuse them. The best season runs from March to June and from September to October.
