Warsaw, once you are there

A reconstructed, modern, and surprisingly lively capital.

Warsaw was destroyed by more than eighty percent, then rebuilt stone by stone. This gives a paradoxical city: a medieval old town that is seventy years old, glass towers next to a Stalinist palace, and a capital energy that rises fast. It is less pretty than Krakow and much livelier.

Getting around. The train or bus connects Chopin Airport to the center in twenty minutes. Metro, trams, and buses are modern and cheap. The center is walkable, but the city is vast: get a day ticket.

Where to stay. Śródmieście to be in the center, Praga on the other side of the Vistula for artist studios and bars. Count 45 to 110 € a night, one of the best value-for-money ratios in Europe.

What to eat. Pierogi in all their forms, żurek, bigos, and a modern Polish cuisine that surprises: Warsaw has a real scene of young chefs. Bars mleczny, canteens inherited from the communist era, serve a complete meal for a few euros.

What to do. The Warsaw Uprising Museum, which gives the key to the whole city — to do before the old town. Łazienki Park and its palace on the water. POLIN, Museum of the History of Polish Jews. And the view from the Palace of Culture.

Good to know. You pay in złotys; change in town, never at the airport. Winters are harsh and days short from November to February. Many museums close on Mondays and open at no charge one day a week.

There you pay in Polish złoty.
