Dubai, once you are there
Deserts, skyscrapers, and a stopover that became a destination.
Dubai was built in fifty years on sand, and it shows: glass towers, artificial islands, air-conditioned malls the size of neighborhoods. But along the creek, there remains an older Dubai of souks, wind-tower houses, and wooden boats crossing the water for a few cents. The stay is only worthwhile if you do both.
Getting around. The metro is modern, air-conditioned, inexpensive, and connects the airport to the center as well as the main neighborhoods. Get a Nol card upon arrival. Taxis are numerous and reasonable. Walking is rarely an option: distances are huge and the heat is crushing half the year.
Where to stay. Deira and Bur Dubai, the old neighborhoods, offer the cheapest rooms and the most character. Downtown and the Marina are more expensive but spectacular. Count 60 to 150 € per night in the low season, double in the European winter.
What to eat. The real food of Dubai is that of the communities who work there: Indian, Pakistani, Lebanese, Iranian, Filipino. The best tables are neighborhood canteens in Deira or Karama, for a handful of euros. Street shawarma and fresh fruit juice are an institution.
What to do. Crossing the creek on an abra, for a dirham. The gold and spice souks. The historic Al Fahidi district and its galleries. The Burj Khalifa at sunset, booked in advance. A trip into the desert, at the end of the day rather than at midday.
Good to know. Avoid June to September: beyond 45 °C, everything happens indoors. November to March is the right period. Alcohol is consumed in hotels and licensed establishments. Dress covered in the old districts and places of worship. The local weekend has been Saturday-Sunday since 2022.
There you pay in UAE dirham.
