London is inexhaustible, and this is both its strength and its trap: you can spend a week there without seeing the same thing twice, and leave without having seen anything at all. The best approach is to choose two or three neighbourhoods and truly inhabit them, rather than running after a list of monuments.

Getting around. The underground connects all airports, with very different times and prices: Heathrow is the best served, Stansted and Luton require a train then an underground. In the city, simply pay with your contactless bank card, it is capped daily and cheaper than a paper ticket.

Where to stay. Stay outside the centre on a direct line: Hackney, Peckham, Walthamstow. The price difference is considerable and the neighbourhoods are more interesting. Expect from 90 to 200 € per night, and more in December.

What to eat. The full English breakfast, the Sunday roast in a pub, and above all world cuisine: Indian in Brick Lane, Caribbean in Brixton, Vietnamese in Kingsland Road. The markets — Borough, Maltby Street, Broadway — are worth an entire lunch.

What to do. The major national museums enter freely: British Museum, Tate Modern, National Gallery, Natural History Museum. Hampstead Heath for the view over the city. The weekend markets. And a show in the West End, with last-minute seats often very affordable.

Good to know. Payment is made in British pounds, and almost always by card. Pubs close early, often around 11 p.m. Walk on the right on the underground escalators, the other side is used for passing — this is taken very seriously. And look to the right before crossing.
