Marrakech is not visited, it is traversed. The medina is a labyrinth of alleyways where you are bound to get lost, and that is the point. There is the postcard Marrakech — souks, riads, Jemaa el-Fna square — and that of the locals, in modern Guéliz or the northern districts. The city is intense, noisy, sometimes grueling, and you keep coming back.

Getting around. The airport is fifteen minutes from the center by taxi; fix the price before leaving. In the medina, everything is done on foot, cars do not enter. The small beige taxis are inexpensive provided you insist on the meter.

Where to stay. A riad in the medina, for the experience: patio, silence, rooftop terrace. Guéliz for quiet, restaurants and classic hotel rooms. Expect from 40 to 120 € per night, much more in luxury riads.

What to eat. Tagines, couscous on Fridays, pastilla, harira for the evening. The stalls in Jemaa el-Fna square at dusk are an experience in themselves. Mint tea is drunk everywhere and all the time, and is difficult to refuse.

What to do. Majorelle Garden, to be booked in advance. The Saadian Tombs and Ben Youssef Madrasa. A hammam, the real neighborhood kind. And an outing: the Agafay desert an hour away, the Atlas and the Ourika valley two hours away, Essaouira and the Atlantic three hours away.

Good to know. You bargain everywhere, calmly, by stating half the price with a smile. Spontaneous 'guides' will offer to lead you somewhere: politely decline, they will ask for money. Summer is scorching, March-May and September-November are ideal. On Fridays, many shops close at midday.
