Getting around. The Leonardo Express train connects Fiumicino to Termini in half an hour; buses are cheaper and slower. The metro is limited but useful, buses fill in the rest. The historic center is entirely done on foot.

Where to stay. Trastevere and Monti for sleeping in a lively neighborhood; Prati for calm and proximity to the Vatican; Testaccio for eating. Avoid the immediate surroundings of Termini. Expect from 80 to 180 € per night.

What to eat. The four Roman pastas: carbonara, cacio e pepe, gricia, amatriciana. Supplì as a starter, Jewish-style artichoke in the Ghetto, pizza al taglio by weight. A coffee is drunk standing at the counter; sitting on a terrace on a tourist square, it costs several times the price.

What to do. The Colosseum and the Forum, with a reserved ticket. The Vatican Museums, early or at night. The Borghese Gallery, on a mandatory time slot. The Pantheon and its dome open to the sky. And an end of the day at the Gianicolo, for the view over the entire city.

Good to know. Book everything that can be booked, otherwise you will spend your days in line. The water from public fountains, the nasoni, is drinkable and excellent. August is stifling and many addresses close. Beware of fake centurions and offered bracelets: nothing will be left to you without compensation.
