Tenerife, once you are there

Spring all year round, a four-hour flight away.

Tenerife holds two climates and two worlds in a single island. The south is dry, sunny all year round and organized for holidays; the north is green, humid, planted with banana groves and villages that live their own lives. In the middle stands Teide, the highest peak in Spain, whose national park looks like another planet. People come for the sun in December and leave wondering why no one had mentioned the forests of Anaga.

Getting around. The southern airport (TFS) is about forty minutes from the seaside resorts, while the northern one (TFN) serves Santa Cruz and La Laguna. The green buses of the TITSA network connect the major towns well, but driving remains the only reasonable way to reach Teide, Masca or the western beaches. Expect around thirty euros per day for a rental outside the high season.

Where to stay. Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos for guaranteed sun and equipped beaches; Puerto de la Cruz for an authentic and much cheaper Canarian town; La Laguna for the student atmosphere and colonial architecture. Expect from 50 to 120 € per night depending on the season, significantly more during the year-end holidays.

What to eat. Papas arrugadas — small potatoes cooked in very salty water — served with red and green mojo, can be found everywhere and cost a few euros. The catch of the day grilled in fishing villages like El Médano or Los Abrigos remains the island's best address. Taste gofio, toasted flour that goes into everything, and the local wine, little-known and very decent.

What to do. Teide by road then cable car, preferably early in the morning before the clouds. The Anaga massif in the northeast, a primitive laurel forest classified by UNESCO. The village of Masca and its winding road. Whale watching departing from Los Gigantes. And Benijo beach, at the end of the world, for the sunset.

Good to know. The weather is fine in the south even when it rains in the north: do not judge the island from your hotel. The nights are chilly as soon as you gain altitude, bring a jacket for Teide even in summer. December to March is the peak European season, prices double around Christmas.
