The problem is not the city, it is the time at which you see it: between ten o'clock and six o'clock, the center is saturated; early in the morning and in the evening, it returns to what it is — a city on the water, silent, where the only noise is that of footsteps and boats.

Getting around. The bus or tram connects the airport to Piazzale Roma in about twenty minutes. Then everything is done on foot or by vaporetto, the water bus: a single journey costs a lot, a day pass pays for itself from the third one onwards.

Where to stay. Cannaregio and Dorsoduro to sleep in the city without the crowd, Castello for the quiet. Avoid Mestre on the mainland, cheaper but beside the point. Expect from 90 to 220 € per night.

What to eat. Cicchetti, small Venetian bites, are eaten standing at the bar with a glass of wine — it is the best time of the day and the least expensive. Sarde in saor, Venetian liver, cuttlefish ink risotto. Shun the tourist menus around St. Mark's.

What to do. Get lost on purpose: the empty alleys begin three streets away from St. Mark's. The islands of Burano and Torcello for the day. The Gallerie dell'Accademia for Venetian painting. And a vaporetto on the Grand Canal at dusk, which is worth all the gondolas.

Good to know. An access fee applies on certain days of high attendance: check the date before booking. The bridges are countless, travel light. Carnival in February and the Biennale fill the city and drive prices up.
