Vienna, once you are there

Imperial Vienna, which can be explored entirely on foot.

Vienna was the capital of an empire and has never quite forgotten it. Palaces, opera, immense museums, cafes where you settle in for an entire afternoon with a single coffee. It is also, year after year, one of the most livable cities in Europe: clean, safe, green, with transport that works. The center can be crossed entirely on foot.

Getting around. The urban train connects the airport to the center in about twenty minutes. Metro, trams, and buses form a dense network; a day ticket quickly pays for itself. The tram that goes around the Ring is a tour in itself, at the price of an ordinary ticket.

Where to stay. The first district is magnificent and expensive. The 6th, 7th, and 8th, just behind, are a ten-minute walk from the center, full of cafes and shops, and much cheaper. Count 70 to 150 € a night, more in December.

What to eat. Wiener Schnitzel, breaded veal cutlet, is eaten in Beisln, neighborhood bistros. Tafelspitz, boiled beef, is the imperial dish. On the sweet side, Sachertorte and Apfelstrudel. The Naschmarkt for lunch on the go and Würstel stands for the night.

What to do. Schönbrunn and its gardens, open access. The Belvedere for Klimt's The Kiss. The Kunsthistorisches Museum, one of the most beautiful in the world. The Opera, with standing tickets sold the same evening for a few euros. And a Viennese coffee, sitting down, for a long time.

Good to know. From late November to Christmas, markets transform the city — it is the most beautiful period and the most expensive. Many museums are closed on Mondays. Tap water comes from the Alps and is drunk without reservation. Dress a bit for the opera, even in standing areas.
