Bangkok, once you are there
Exhausting, noisy, and one of the world's great cities.
Bangkok exhausts and fascinates. It is a megacity of heat, noise, and smells, where a golden temple adjoins an air-conditioned mall and a noodle stall set up on the sidewalk. Two or three days are enough to love it; any more and you dream of the islands. It is also one of the best cities in the world to eat.
Getting around. The express train connects Suvarnabhumi to the center. Next, the Skytrain and subway avoid memorable traffic jams, and the Chao Phraya boats are a real transport line, not an attraction. Taxis must use the meter; otherwise, get out.
Where to stay. Sukhumvit for convenience and transport, Banglamphu near Khao San for the backpacker vibe, Riverside for charm. Count 25 to 90 € a night, very little for what you get.
What to eat. Eat on the street, where there is a queue and fast turnover: it is the best of the city. Pad Thai, som tam, khao soi, green curry, mango sticky rice. A complete meal costs a few euros. Chinatown at night is Asia's largest open-air restaurant.
What to do. The Grand Palace and Wat Pho, early in the morning, dressed covered. Wat Arun at sunset. The Chatuchak weekend market, immense. And a Thai massage, the real one, which costs the price of a coffee in Europe.
Good to know. You pay in bahts. November to February is the dry season and the most pleasant. Shoulders and knees covered in temples, without exception. Beware of touts who announce that a site is 'closed today': it is false. Never touch anyone's head, and do not point your feet at a statue.
There you pay in Thai baht.
